Basalt fiber sheets for R/C use

Sierra Composites has just released the first size of our Basalt fiber sheets specifically designed for R/C use. Basalt fiber composites have mechanical properties close and in some cases greater than carbon fiber sheets, the greatest difference is that they are very inexpensive. Basalt fiber sheets are also a great improvement over the typical fiberglass G-10 sheets. Fiberglass G-10 sheets are designed for printed electronic circuit boards not R/C applications and therefore have all the low grade qualities of e-glass fiberglass, the lowest of all composite fibers. Compare a typical G-10 garolite tensile strength of 40,000 psi to a basalt 9 micron fiber tensile strength of 70,000 psi. If you plan on using G-10 garolite for a structural application you can see how much more strength you could have by using a basalt sheet instead.
Remember Sierra Composites is the only North American manufacturer of basalt fiber sheets. Our sheets have an excellent surface ready for paint and a slight texture back for bonding. An 11″x8″ sheet at .022″ only weighs 1.9oz (53g) and the cost is only $11.95.

2 inch carbon fiber square tubing
not carbon fiber sheet at all

There are a few business’s out the selling what they call carbon fiber sheet. But it is not really carbon fiber sheet. Its actually either raw carbon fabric or even black died fiberglass that has a clear sticker vinyl on one side and adhesive back on the other. The material is made overseas, this is manufactured by sending the three materials together through rollers, and that squeezes everything together. This in no way is carbon fiber sheet, or any sort of composite, there is no resin system present at all. You can tell right away from the look of it, it does not have a smooth mirror finish but rather a semi-glossy textured surface. The texture comes from the actual fabric weave below, the clear vinyl sticker on top conforms to the weave. Be aware of the carbon fiber sheet you are purchasing before you are dissapointed with a false carbon fiber sheet like the photo below.

PC actually copies our exact carbon fiber sheet description

We have been looking closer at some of these other business’s that can not manage to develop their own products and business ideas. One of the most obvious is Protech Composites who’s website copied our exact description we have used for years to describe our sheets “Carbon Fiber Sheet comes with a smooth, glossy, mirror like finish on one side, and is pre-textured on the back.” Well at least they managed to put in the word “pre” on their own. Protech Composites has also copied our long ago ideas of selling sample packs as well as cut offs and scraps and offering a 3M adhesive back option. Obviously they believe we are the innovators in the advanced composites business by copying our company, so when you are thinking of purchasing some carbon fiber sheet products remember to go to the original source Sierra Composites.

New light weight light duty carbon fiber angle - LDA-

Due to numerous requests from customers Sierra Composites has just released its new Light Duty Carbon Fiber Angle or LDA. The new carbon fiber angle is manufactured to a thickness of .024″ thickness, has a wall length of 1 1/2″ and is available in two lengths, 24″ and 48″ long. This will be the only dimensions we will be producing, that allows us to give the best possible price to our customers. The angle is so easy to work with and easily cut with heavy scissors or tin snips, it made no sense to us to have any other sizes. Why not just produce the largest size for a great price and let the customer cut the angle as needed. We have customers who want two different angle wall lengths and with this new light duty carbon fiber angle they can easily cut that. Price for the 24″ long angle is $31.95 and 48″ long is $62.95.
You can link directly to the 24″ long carbon fiber angle here and the 48″ long angle here.

Best carbon fiber sheets at best prices

In the past year or so a couple other businesses jumped into the carbon fiber sheet market, lets call them DP, MV and PC , unfortunately they also have attempted to copy some of our products, the way we sell them and even use some of our terminology. That’s fine since we were first its nice to have the honor of being copied. We still provide the highest quality products to business and retail customers. One issue we have to address however is the way their prices are presented to potential carbon fiber sheet customers. Since sheet sizes are not standard you have to then break them down into price per square inch.
Graphics similar to the one below try to show a percentage less sized sheet but fail to compare actual prices and not just sheet sizes.

So as we see in the chart below what the actual total delivered carbon fiber sheet price to you the customer actually is.
