GREEN carbon fiber color sheets

Sierra Composites has just introduced its GREEN color carbon fiber sheets. Sierra Composites is the only manufacturer of this product. Unlike traditional Kevlar/Carbon hybrid weaves, our sheets do not have one color fiber strand woven to a black strand, nor do they have workability issues that Kevlar fibers present. Our new Green carbon fiber sheets have a more subtle look and can reflect a lighter or darker green depending on the light source. Currently these are available in our .015″ sheets only. However we can manufacture any of our products to have the same green color look. Contact us with questions about that.

Carbon fiber 90mm EDF motor mount modification

Sierra Composites is a large supplier to the radio control community, as it has so many uses that it is best suited for. The example here is an excellent use of our carbon fiber .059″ sheet material as a motor mount repair / strengthening application on a 90mm EDF fan unit.  These EDF fans can turn in the 40,000 rpm range, and even with proper balancing cause some vibrations. The motor for this fan is a KD-36-74 and weighs 390 grams, it needs a solid motor mount. The stock motor mount in this Haoye 90mm fan unit is a weak spot and can not take motor heat in the 170 degF  range along with some vibrations. The mount design is weak to begin with. Our carbon fiber sheet was used to strengthen up that mount as shown in the photos. The carbon backup disc is bonded to the original plastic fan housing to become one complete part with the housing.

More special R/C small project sheets

Our customers requested it, so we made it (again). Sierra Composites has just released its small R/C project carbon fiber plate. These 1.2mm compliment our recently released 2.2mm double sided smooth / glossy plate sheets are very rigid and are well suited to small R/C structural parts such as shock towers and brackets. We know many in the R/C community fabricate thier own custom parts for cars, airplanes, boats and helicopters, Our new 5.5″ x 7.5″ carbon fiber plate sheets are perfect inexpensive way to make those parts.

New carbon fiber sheet sizes

Sierra Composites customers requested that our carbon fiber sheets be available in half sheet sizes. So that’s exactly what we did. Our carbon fiber sheets in thickness .023″ / .041″ / .059″ and .125″ are all now available in half sheet sizes of 5.5″ x 8″.

Real carbon fibers? maybe - Real carbon fiber sheet composite? No

Since Sierra Composites was first made aware of a product that was called “Carbon Fiber Sheet” but was possibly raw carbon fiber fabric sandwiched between a clear vinyl on top and an adhesive backing. Further research has found the manufacturer of this “sort of ” carbon fiber sheet, its from an offshore company called Senko http://www.senkostyle.com/ under a heading of “Films” or “Laminate Films”. The company makes a wide variety of these films and adhesive films, tapes and a wide range of other products. The carbon fiber sheet film product is brand marketed under the name Senko Performance Carbon or Performance Carbon. How do we know the film construction is as we say, easy, we can peel apart the clear vinyl sticker on top from the carbon like fabric. Why do I say “carbon like fabric”, well judging from products that are made in China and based on what this product’s retail price is, I would suggest that most likely this is a E-Fiberglass approx 5.7 oz 2×2 twill weave that has been dyed black with the clear vinyl sticker on top and a non-3M adhesive backing of unknown quality.  We also noticed that most all photos of this product do not show the texture that is on the good side, but we have found a few that shows the true product. Now we are not claiming that this “carbon fiber sheet” is no good, maybe for your application it works, but it definitely is not true carbon fiber sheet composite as many would believe it is. Carbon fiber signs at indoor karting and restaurant facility

 A couple years ago Sierra Composites teamed up with a design studio in Chicago to fabricate some custom carbon fiber sheets for one of their clients. Those carbon fiber sheet laminates were used around the facility as signage. They were made from our .059″ carbon fiber sheet and mounted to the walls with standoffs so they “floated” off the wall. We have had this photo for quite a while and forgot about it. Its a great photo showing how Sierra Composites carbon fiber products are used in may applications. The restaurant is Stewart’s Bar and Grille located in the Chicago Indoor Racing complex in Buffalo Grove Ill.

Corvette Z06 carbon fiber sheet fuel door

One of our great customers just sent us a few photos of Sierra Composites .015″ thin carbon fiber sheet veneer. The carbon fiber sheet with 3M adhesive backing was used as a veneer layer over the stock Corvette Z06 fuel door. The Corvette already has a very race car look to it, but the carbon fuel door gives it that extra detail. This project was simple and inexpensive to complete but makes a nice upgrade to the Corvette Z06.
