High speed carbon fiber robot end arm = faster production + reliablity

Sierra Composites continues to work with plastic cup, CD, DVD and other manufacturers that utilize high speed robotics. Replacing a heavy aluminum end of arm tool with a carbon fiber part generally reduces the weight of that part by 50%. This gives your robot the ability to run faster generating more units in the same run time. Switching over to a carbon fiber end of arm tool is also much easier on the machine itself, since it now only has to move half the weight as it did the heavy metal part. This benefit decreases the mechanical breakdowns and repair times of your automated machines, this also adds to number of units produced while reducing capital spent on machine repairs. GREEN carbon fiber color sheets

Sierra Composites has just introduced its GREEN color carbon fiber sheets. Sierra Composites is the only manufacturer of this product. Unlike traditional Kevlar/Carbon hybrid weaves, our sheets do not have one color fiber strand woven to a black strand, nor do they have workability issues that Kevlar fibers present. Our new Green carbon fiber sheets have a more subtle look and can reflect a lighter or darker green depending on the light source. Currently these are available in our .015″ sheets only. However we can manufacture any of our products to have the same green color look. Contact us with questions about that.

Sierra Composites customers requested that our carbon fiber sheets be available in half sheet sizes. So that’s exactly what we did. Our carbon fiber sheets in thickness .023″ / .041″ / .059″ and .125″ are all now available in half sheet sizes of 5.5″ x 8″.

Custom carbon fiber parts for high speed robotics

For years Sierra Composites has built custom carbon fiber components for end arm tools for use on  high speed robotic arms in manufacturing, such as plastic cups/containers and CD machines. These robotic machines normally move at high speeds and also have the need to accelerate then stop then accelerate again, sometimes changing directions as well. Because carbon fiber is the lightest  most durable type of contruction for a component, its perfect for robotic end arm tooling. And as a result of this construction it allows the robot to potentially move even faster, thus more units can be moved or made equally potentially more profit. Sierra Composites has fabricated several table top styles consisting of a honeycomb core with carbon fiber skins. Sierra Composites has also fabricated very light weight vacuum chamber panels utilizing a Rohacell foam core.

Real carbon fibers? maybe - Real carbon fiber sheet composite? No

Since Sierra Composites was first made aware of a product that was called “Carbon Fiber Sheet” but was possibly raw carbon fiber fabric sandwiched between a clear vinyl on top and an adhesive backing. Further research has found the manufacturer of this “sort of ” carbon fiber sheet, its from an offshore company called Senko http://www.senkostyle.com/ under a heading of “Films” or “Laminate Films”. The company makes a wide variety of these films and adhesive films, tapes and a wide range of other products. The carbon fiber sheet film product is brand marketed under the name Senko Performance Carbon or Performance Carbon. How do we know the film construction is as we say, easy, we can peel apart the clear vinyl sticker on top from the carbon like fabric. Why do I say “carbon like fabric”, well judging from products that are made in China and based on what this product’s retail price is, I would suggest that most likely this is a E-Fiberglass approx 5.7 oz 2×2 twill weave that has been dyed black with the clear vinyl sticker on top and a non-3M adhesive backing of unknown quality.  We also noticed that most all photos of this product do not show the texture that is on the good side, but we have found a few that shows the true product. Now we are not claiming that this “carbon fiber sheet” is no good, maybe for your application it works, but it definitely is not true carbon fiber sheet composite as many would believe it is. Sierra Composites typically gets inquiries regarding custom carbon fiber parts and other advanced composites fabrication. While we do not fabricate custom parts for a Honda Civic or similar products. We do have the capability of fabricating one off custom carbon fiber parts such as a large scale carbon fiber square tube, round tubing, oval tubing, airfoil etc. We can produce these composite parts using just about any fabrics from 8HS carbon fiber to 3K twill, Basalt fabric hybrids  to Hexply prepreg.
