Carbon fiber 90mm EDF motor mount modification

Sierra Composites is a large supplier to the radio control community, as it has so many uses that it is best suited for. The example here is an excellent use of our carbon fiber .059″ sheet material as a motor mount repair / strengthening application on a 90mm EDF fan unit.  These EDF fans can turn in the 40,000 rpm range, and even with proper balancing cause some vibrations. The motor for this fan is a KD-36-74 and weighs 390 grams, it needs a solid motor mount. The stock motor mount in this Haoye 90mm fan unit is a weak spot and can not take motor heat in the 170 degF  range along with some vibrations. The mount design is weak to begin with. Our carbon fiber sheet was used to strengthen up that mount as shown in the photos. The carbon backup disc is bonded to the original plastic fan housing to become one complete part with the housing.

More special R/C small project sheets

Our customers requested it, so we made it (again). Sierra Composites has just released its small R/C project carbon fiber plate. These 1.2mm compliment our recently released 2.2mm double sided smooth / glossy plate sheets are very rigid and are well suited to small R/C structural parts such as shock towers and brackets. We know many in the R/C community fabricate thier own custom parts for cars, airplanes, boats and helicopters, Our new 5.5″ x 7.5″ carbon fiber plate sheets are perfect inexpensive way to make those parts.

Basalt fiber sheets for R/C use

 Sierra Composites has just released the first size of our Basalt fiber sheets specifically designed for R/C use. Basalt fiber composites have mechanical properties close and in some cases greater than carbon fiber sheets, the greatest difference is that they are very inexpensive. Basalt fiber sheets are also a great improvement over the typical fiberglass G-10 sheets. Fiberglass G-10 sheets are designed for printed electronic circuit boards not R/C applications and therefore have all the low grade qualities of e-glass fiberglass, the lowest of all composite fibers. Compare a typical G-10 garolite tensile strength of 40,000 psi to a basalt 9 micron fiber tensile strength of 70,000 psi. If you plan on using G-10 garolite for a structural application you can see how much more strength you could have by using a basalt sheet instead.

Remember Sierra Composites is the only North American manufacturer of basalt fiber sheets. Our sheets have an excellent surface ready for paint and a slight texture back for bonding. An 11″x8″ sheet at .022″ only weighs 1.9oz (53g) and the cost is only $11.95.

New light weight light duty carbon fiber angle - LDA-

Due to numerous requests from customers Sierra Composites has just released its new Light Duty Carbon Fiber Angle or LDA. The new carbon fiber angle is manufactured to a thickness of .024″ thickness, has a wall length of 1 1/2″ and is available in two lengths, 24″ and 48″ long. This will be the only dimensions we will be producing, that allows us to give the best possible price to our customers. The angle is so easy to work with and easily cut with heavy scissors or tin snips, it made no sense to us to have any other sizes. Why not just produce the largest size for a great price and let the customer cut the angle as needed. We have customers who want two different angle wall lengths and with this new light duty carbon fiber angle they can easily cut that. Price for the 24″ long angle is $31.95 and 48″ long is $62.95.

Basalt carbon fiber hybrid angle

Basalt / carbon fiber sheet 2.5mm R/C Special use

This carbon fiber / basalt hybrid sheet is one of a series of prototype 2.5mm sheets we made specifically for R/C use. The sheet is double sided smooth and glossy. The sheet was made using Hexcel IM7GP 5HS and Basalt fabric 12K Unidirectional. The unidirectional is positioned down the length of the sheet, giving the most rigidity in that direction. We would like some feedback on these, we would like to know if our customers like this product enough to include into our line of carbon fiber sheet products.
